The Target Illumination has now been installed in the building of the Laser Ion Source. This took place in the middle of May 2001, when the normal team was joined by S Kondrashev and A Balabyev fro ITEP to assist in the final testing.

During the final week, the mirrors inside the vacuum chambers were installed, the light delivery system (up to the vacuum chambers) was finished and the optical system was aligned. Towards the end of the week the Lumonics laser could be fired onto the target in order to start studies of the stability of the system.

Some impact craters on the multi-faced target
Above the target is shown with some of the crater impact points. The long focal length in this case leads to very large craters with a large sputter area. The oscillation of the impact points around a straight line in this photo is deliberate.
